There are three methods of testing for the determination of the specific gravity of aggregates, according to the size of the aggregates larger than 10 mm, 40 mm and smaller than 10 mm. For Samples larger than 10 mm, 40 mm, the below given test method is used and for samples smaller than 10 mm Pycnometer test is done

Apparatus Required:

• A balance of capacity about 3kg, to weigh accurate 0.5g, and of such a type and shape as to permit weighing of the sample container when suspended in water.
• A wire basket of not more than 6.3 mm mesh or a perforated container of convenient size with thin wire hangers for suspending it from the balance.
• A container for filling water and suspending the basket
• An air tight container of capacity similar to that of the basket
• A shallow tray and two absorbent clothes, each not less than 75x45cm

The Los Angeles test is a measure of degradation of mineral aggregates of standard gradings resulting from a combination of actions including abrasion or attrition, impact, and grinding in a rotating steel drum containing a specified number of steel spheres. The Los Angeles (L.A.) abrasion test is a common test method used to indicate aggregate toughness and abrasion characteristics. Aggregate abrasion characteristics are important because the constituent aggregate in HMA must resist crushing, degradation and disintegration in order to produce a high quality HMA.

Apparatus:

• Steel Spherical Balls machine :The machine is equipped with a counter. The machine shall consist of hollow steel cylinder closed at both ends. An opening in cylinder shall be provided for introducing the sample sieves
• Aggregate used in highway pavement should be hard and must resist wear due to the loading from compaction equipment, the polishing effect of traffic and the internal abrasion effect.
• The road aggregate should be hard enough to resist the abrasion of aggregate. Resistance to abrasion is determined in laboratory by loss angles abrasion test

It consists:

• A testing machine weighing 45 to 60 kg and having a metal base with a painted lower surface of not less than 30 cm in diameter. It is supported on level and plane concrete floor of minimum 45 cm thickness. The machine should also have provisions for fixing its base.
• A metal hammer or tup weighing 13.5 to 14.0 kg the lower end being cylindrical in shape, 50 mm long, 100.0 mm in diameter, with a 2 mm chamfer at the lower edge and case hardened. The hammer should slide freely between vertical guides and be concentric with the cup. Free fall of hammer should be within 380±5 mm.
• A cylindrical metal measure having internal diameter 75 mm and depth 50 mm for measuring aggregates.
• Tamping rod 10 mm in diameter and 230 mm long, rounded at one end.
• A balance of capacity not less than 500g, readable and accurate up to 0.1 g.
